Organizing Tips for the Garage

Posted on September 19, 2012 at 10:00 AM

How come there is always something in our homes that needs organized, gone through or de-cluttered?  The obvious answer might be...because we have too much stuff.  In my house, it is definitely The Philosopher's garage stuff that needs the most help.

Help your spouse, partner or significant other stay organized.  Below are two low cost solutions for the garage or work area that don't require a lot of time:

1)  Install Pegboard - Pegboard can be cut to fit the size of your wall and hung easily with screws.  Buy a variety of tool hangers so every tool will have a home.  This visual tool box makes it easy to quickly find and put away all gadgets and will free up needed space on the tool bench.

2)  Store all of those small and easyto lose home essentials such as nails, washers, and screws in bins and labelthe bins.

The first step in this project will most likely require you to sort through that tin can or drawer that currently contains all the screws, nails and washers in one big heap.

Ugh, I know, but it will be well worth the effort the next time when you are looking for that one specific screw and know exactly where to find it.  You can also make the sorting a family affair, kids love to help!

Once the small tools are sorted, put them in small containers if needed.  You can buy containers at hardware stores or old plastic food containers work great as well.

Put the containers in bins and label the bins.  When possible, use visual labels. Simply place one or two of the small tools on a white piece of paper or cardstock and then use clear tape to stick the paper to the bin.

Viola! And remember this project doesn’t have to be perfect or pretty, were talking about tools here people, we just need to be able to find them!

great tips. I love those plastic bins. We use a ton of those in our garage also. They work wonders with all the light bulbs and batteries and such!

Great garage organization advice. When there is more than one open hanger on the wall peg board, I have trouble knowing which hanger I took the tool from. I may draw with a black marker around the tool to know the exact return spot for each item.

How do you feel about getting the Philosopher's dad organized? Putting things back is a real killer, too. I had to ask for my kitchen scizzors, yes kitchen, and he went outside somewhere to retrieve them. Don't even want to know what they were used for, but at least he ran them through the dishwasher for me.
